What up people?!
Okay, so Kanye West and Jay-z have dropped their newest collaborative effort “Watch the Throne”. Strictly Hip Hop: The Blogspot has been keeping ya’ll up on the hype surrounding the album so its only right that we drop a review.
Once again, Watch the Throne dropped…so what does that mean? Well a couple of things.
1.) Bloggers goin crazy with ratings from straight garbage to classic.
2.) Everybody is critiquing and tweeting from Dwayne Wade, to Talib Kweli, to Angela Simmons to the average hip hop head in the Barber Shop.
3.) Hoppers coming out from under their “proverbial” rocks running to I-Tunes just to see what all the fuss is about cause they had no idea any of this was even going on. (Hope you paid close attention to this last one.)
And it means some more things but we dont have all day…all in all this was an event. Watch the Throne is claimed to be the first album that hasnt leaked in years and the promo for this jawn was basically word of mouth. No music videos (yet). No MTV blitz. Just two released tracks H.A.M and Otis. Damn.
Alright, all hippity hoopla aside…IS THE ALBUM “STRICTLY”? As in Strictly Hip Hop? Let’s review.
Initially off the first listen…
The album begins with a semi-nice set up with Jay-z immediately gettin busy with the rhymes on “No Church in the Wild” featuring newcomer crooner Frank Ocean. A little singy but flows and verses from Mr. Carter and Kanye carry the boomin track lacking a snare drum. The content and wittiness are immediate stand outs as well.
However “Lift Off” featuring Beyonce takes the album some where else. Definitely not off to “strictly” land but more like wonder land. Nevertheless, those “hoppers” I talked about earlier, especially the pretty female ones, may not have a problem with the track at all! Regardless, that track was garbage.
Dont worry lol! Things pick right up with N#ggaz in Paris, the unapologetic southern trap banger with disgustingly braggadocious raps. Hey, hey, hey,… its like the Will Ferrell sample says “no one knows what it means but its proVOCative, it gets people going!” Yeah, its trap and its bouncy, but its the most grandiose a trap track can get. Now how ya’ll gonna let ol’man Hov come in and shine on your own style? (Rick Ross, Gucci Mane I’m lookin at you)
By now all the conscious hip hop heads are probably screwing their face up like “so”.Well the Rza produced “New Day” should shut your face. The Nina Simone sample merged with the thoughtfulness of Kanye and Jay writing letters to their unborn sons deserves its props. Of course emcee “I Been Gettin Busy” raps about this stuff all the time on the underground. That’s great. But its even better when the Rza produces it, and the legendary Jay-z and Kanye West “connect” on the concept. Sorry, but yeah. Undeniable is the word I’m looking for.
Now there is some other garbage on the album like “That’s My B#tch” which would be nice if it wasnt for that wacky chorus (Jay actually murders his verse here), but bangaz like “Murder to Excellence” which is like two songs merged into one make up for the nonsense.
Kanye kills it with “I feel the pain in my city wherever I go/314 soldiers died in Iraq…509 died in Chicago” and Shawn Carter not to be out done with lines like “I arrived on the day Fred Hampton died…Real N#ggaz just multiply/ December 21, I was supposed to die/ So I’m out here celebrating my post demise”. Ooooowee.
Overall the album had its ups and downs but as a result, it definitely was a valiant effort on all parties. Jay and Kanye along with the participating producers delivered a solid album. In most cases besides a few wack fillers and some weirdo interlude beats, it is easy on the ear and has bangaz for definite replay value.
